This fantastic garden painting comes from the triclinium of the Villa di Livia in Prima Porta. Livia Drusilla was the wife of Emperor Augustus and owned several houses and villas. This luxurious villa was surrounded by a laurel forest, and the underground dining room, the triclinium, was painted on all four sides with realistic garden scenes. This allowed one to enjoy the coolness of the house's interior while still having a view of an ideal garden. A variety of plants and animals from the Mediterranean world are depicted: laurel, pine, oak, cypress, orange and pomegranate trees, magpies, nightingales, and swallows.

The painting can be dated to approximately 20–10 BC and shows the transition from the second (architectural) to the third (ornamental) style. The painting takes every small detail into account, from the patterns of the fabrics to the faithful reproduction of all cracks, chips, and repairs. This is craftsmanship of the highest caliber, of museum quality.

The original size of the fresco is 2.70 x 2.90 meters. It can also be made in other sizes. For a custom size not listed here, please email me at mail@anekah.de and I will send you a price quote.
