The Bull Leap of Knossos — Courage and Grace from the Bronze Age
One of the most famous motifs of the Minoan world — hand-painted on fabric.
A bull at full gallop. A person leaping over it. A breath-taking moment — captured over 3,500 years ago on a palace wall at Knossos. This hand-painted wall hanging brings one of the most thrilling scenes of antiquity to your living room.
The Bull Leaping fresco originates from the east wing of the Palace of Knossos on Crete and was created during the late phase of the Late Palace period, c. 1600–1400 BC (SM I–II). The original is now housed in the Heraklion Archaeological Museum.
The fresco depicts three figures: on the left, a leaper grasps the galloping bull by its lowered horns. A second figure performs a somersault over the animal’s back. Behind the bull stands a third figure with outstretched arms — ready to catch the leaper.
The motif of the bull-leap was ubiquitous in Minoan culture — on frescoes, gold rings, seals and stone vessels — and continues to occupy researchers to this day. Whether it was an initiation ritual, a harvest or vegetation festival, or a ritual encounter between human and animal remains inconclusively clarified to this day.
The figures are young and athletic. The size of the bull is no artistic exaggeration: skeletal remains prove that the Bos primigenius, the giant wild aurochs ancestor of our modern domestic cattle, lived on Crete.
The fresco captivates with its lively composition: The mighty bull, rendered in reddish-brown and ochre and dynamically stretched out to the right, occupies the entire centre of the image. The slender figures of the leapers stand out in stark contrast. The light blue background lends the scene a sense of lightness and space. A decorative border of repeating motifs in orange, blue and grey frames the motif, giving it the character of a woven tapestry.
This fresco tells a story that needs no explanation — you feel it immediately: strength, courage, movement. The colour palette of terracotta, light blue and ochre harmonises beautifully with Mediterranean, natural and modern interiors. As an eye-catcher in the living room or study, it makes a distinctive statement — and invites you to marvel at it.
A unique piece. Hand-painted. One of a kind.
My painting takes every tiny detail into account, from the patterns of the fabrics to the faithful reproduction of every crack and every chipped and restored area. This is craftsmanship of the highest standard and museum quality.
The dimensions of 1.84 x 1.07 m are the original size of the fresco. It can also be commissioned in other sizes. For a custom size not listed here, please email me at mail@anekah.de and I will send you a quote.
