The Lily Fresco of Amnissos — 3,600 years of beauty, captured on fabric
A touch of Crete for your home.
What once adorned the walls of a Minoan villa now adorns your living space — hand-painted on fabric, in the living tradition of ancient wall art.
The original comes from the so-called ‘Villa of the Lilies’ in Amnissos, a port in Crete, situated just seven kilometres east of Heraklion. There, frescoes featuring red and white lilies adorned the walls of the upper floor. The frescoes were created during the first phase of the villa’s construction in the Middle Minoan III period — that is, around 1600 BC.
The motif depicts a majestic lily plant with delicately curved flowers and leaves in white against warm red tones — set within a terraced structure that presumably represents an enclosed garden.
The original technique used here is particularly interesting: the lilies were carved into the fresco using the cavo technique, and the recesses were filled in with thick white paint.
The colour palette of burnt sienna, warm rose tones and creamy white blends effortlessly with Mediterranean, natural and even modern interior styles. The organic lines of the lily bring vitality without restlessness — exactly what a living space needs. The fresco works both as a serene focal point above a sofa and as an atmospheric centrepiece in the bedroom or dining room.
My painting takes every small detail into account, right down to the faithful reproduction of all cracks and chipped and restored areas. This is craftsmanship of the highest standard and museum quality.
The dimensions of 1.87 x 1.48 m are the original size of the fresco. It can also be commissioned in other sizes. For a custom size not listed here, please email me at mail@anekah.de and I will send you a quote.
