The Akrotiri Antelope Fresco — Wildness and grace, painted on fabric
Light-footed, lively, facing each other almost tenderly: two antelopes in a moment of tranquillity. This hand-painted wall hanging brings one of the most beautiful and delicate depictions of animals from the Bronze Age straight into your living room.
The antelope fresco comes from the Beta complex in Akrotiri on Santorini — a Bronze Age city that was buried by a volcanic eruption and thus preserved for over 3,500 years. The city’s latest ceramic styles date to the Late Cycladic IA phase, corresponding to approximately 1530–1620 BC. The excellent state of preservation of the frescoes offers unique insights into the cultural and artistic history of the Bronze Age in the Aegean. The themes of the murals range from scenes of daily life, seafaring and agriculture to sporting or ritual games — landscape scenes depict the flora and fauna of Santorini, as well as those of exotic lands.
The antelope fresco is one of the stylistically purest and most graceful examples of this tradition.
Against a warm, red ochre background in the upper panel, two white antelopes stand out with finely curved black outlines — floating lightly, anatomically precise, full of movement. The characteristic curved horns, the slender long legs, the expressive faces: the painters of Akrotiri observed the animal world with extraordinary care and affection. Despite their decorative simplicity, the animals appear lifelike — as if the antelope on the left might turn its head at any moment. A frieze of geometric leaves in blue and red frames the scene at the top and completes the sense of nature in this panel.
The warm terracotta palette, with cream white and subtle shades of blue, blends effortlessly into Mediterranean, natural and modern interiors. Unlike the dramatic scenes of the bull’s leap or the saffron gatherers, this motif unfolds its effect quietly — it soothes, it draws you in, it lingers. An ideal companion for bedrooms, studies or tranquil living areas.
My painting takes every tiny detail into account, from the patterns of the fabrics to the faithful reproduction of every crack and every chipped or restored area. This is craftsmanship of the highest standard and museum quality.
The dimensions of 2.12 x 2.40 m are the original size of the fresco. It can also be produced in other sizes. For a custom size not listed here, please email me at mail@anekah.de and I will send you a quote.
